What makes a Music Video successful?

In a class discussion we spoke about the success criteria of a Music Video and the factors in which how it can be measured.

A more modern measurement of the success of a music video is the amount of hits the official video has on Youtube.

Magazine publicity makes millions of people aware of Music videos especially if they cause controversy or are of other significance.

Download results are also a method of success measurement, high downloads of a particular song could be because of the popularity of the Music video.

Television is perhaps the biggest way to discover the success of a Music Video. The more a music video is shown is evident to its increasing positive reputation. Requests from Audiences also effectively show a Music Videos success.

The Midnight Beast - Background

The Midnight Beast is a British comedy Music group originating from London, best known for its parody of Kesha's 'Tik Tok' released in December 2009. Stefan Abingdon, Dru wakely and Ashley Horne make up the group. Abingdon is a multi-instrumentalist, and can be seen playing acoustic and electric guitars, Keyboards and Ukeleles in Youtube with his various bands. Wakely was also a musician prior to the formation of The Midnight Beast, playing  alongside Abingdon in Icarus Burning, The Clik, and Perfect People Clik.  is the only member of the group with no known professional musical experience prior to forming The Midnight Beast, although Horne can be seen playing the bass guitar in concert with the group.

Song Choice

Me and my group have decided to use the song 'Booty Call' by The Midnight Beast in our music video, although the band are signed. To avoid breaching any copyright laws I emailed the band to ask if it was possible to use the song. I got this email back from the lead singers Mum.

Preliminary Task

For our Preliminary task we were asked to perform and film our own rendition of Elton John's ' Don't go Breaking my Heart'. In a group of 4 consisting of myself Charlie Land, Jake Williams and angela Chinnick we shot the footage in school and I sung the lyrics originally performed by Elton John whilst charlie performed the Lyrics by Kiki D. After we edited the footage in Final cut express and below is the final product. From this task as an individual I improved in my knowledge of directing a music video, the editing of a music video, whole takes and lip synching.

Jamie Thraves

 Today in Lesson we studied the work of Jamie Thraves, a British film and Music Director who is responsible for the production of Coldplay's ' The scientist ' and Radiohead's 'Hurt videos. Thraves produced both of these world renound videos in three days and under the budget of £200,000. Thraves is of importance because he will provide an insight into what it takes to establish a music video of high quality.
